Mass migration of Black Terns

In the first half of August there was a massive migration of terns along the Texel North Sea coast and through the Marsdiep. Besides Sandwich Terns, Common Terns and to a lesser extent Little Terns, the large number of migrating Black Terns was particularly striking. In other years, only a few dozen of these elegant marsh terns were observed on Texel during this period. Now sometimes several thousand birds per day were counted. A possible cause could be that the birds are disturbed by the extensive work on and along the Afsluitdijk. This area is on the east-west migration route of Black Terns. The birds probably choose an alternative route to the North Sea, passing the west and east side of Texel 'en masse'. Several White-winged Terns were also observed in recent weeks. A juvenile bird has been regularly seen in the Muy since 24 August. The bird hunts above a shallow pool and regularly catches large dragonflies.
