It's an understatement to write that there had been better months of May in the past. I mean of course in terms of rare bird species observed. The cause? Who knows may say. Undoubtedly, the weather plays a large role. The wind was almost always from the west direction and the temperature remained.
But if you put everything in perspective, you still get a nice list of species. The second half of the month eg Red-rumped Swallow (Den Hoorn, concerns third record for this year, 17/5), Glossy Ibis (De Geul, 22/5), 2 Black-winged Stilts (possible breeding pair at De Lange Dam, post 28), Montagu Harrier (flying female, 24/5), Greenish Warbler (Dorpszicht, 29/5) Rosefinch (27/5 and 31/5) and Hoopoe (Tuintjes, 30/5) were observed. Today 10 European Bee-eaters flew over De Koog. Along the Hoofdweg at the junction with the Hollandse weg are still 5 Dotterels present. Tomorrow starts the month of June. New month, new opportunities ....
