Annually several tens Horned Larks overwinter in De Slufter. Sometimes accompanied by some Twites. Tundra Bean Geese visit Texel with several thousand and prefer wet fields. In the Marsdiep and along the North Sea coast are sometimes Long-tailed Ducks seen.
Little Egrets are fairly common, and show themselves in several places. The Mokbaai, the Slufter and Schorren are good places to see these graceful white herons.Redwings, Fieldfares and Blackbirds foraging in berry trees and grasslands.
Redpolls are typically winter guests and sometimes visit during invasion years with large numbers The Netherlands. Till now this fall are not seen large numbers on Texel.
On November 27, an Arctic Redpoll was found by Ruud van Beusekom at Oost. This vagrant from the north of Eurasia is only 9 times previously observed on Texel. On 4 December, probably the same bird was seen again in a group of about 20 Redpolls at Oosterend.
Just over two weeks to go in 2016. We can look back on an extremely good birding year with many attractive and rare species. This year the Texel Avifauna list expanded by as much as four species; Great Knot, Roseate Tern, Forster's Tern and Black-headed Wagtail.
