Common Kingfishers do not breed on Texel. Possibly there was an incidental breeding pair in 2016 (source: Ornithological Annual Report Texel 2016). From August to April, this species is regularly seen. Probably in this period there are about dozens of winterers. If ditches and channels freeze, it is often easier to see this colorful fisherman. The last open watercourses are then the designated places to search for Common Kingfisher. If the frost period lasts too long and all watercourses are frozen, this causes many victims among this appealing species. The Dutch name is actually not that appropriate. A Common Kingfisher (in Dutch 'IJsvogel') is a water-loving bird and certainly not frost-resistant.
