This beautiful plover species is a breeding bird of Northern Europe and Russia. In the first half of the last century, the Golden Plover was still breeding in the Netherlands. Nowadays the species overwinter in large numbers in our country. The number of birds on Texel in August is limited to a few thousand at most. In the winter, the number can far exceed ten thousand. The birds look for food in fields and meadows and are also often found outside the dikes. A large group of Golden Plovers in flight where they massively express their melancolic call is a great experience.
