Sovon and Bird Life Netherlands choose every year a bird species that does not go well. 2020 is the Year of the Mallard. A common species in the Netherlands whose breeding population has fallen by no less than 30% in the last 30 years. Among other things, research on chicks must show where the cause lies. More information you find on the SOVON website.
Something very different. Last weekend two nice South African ladies participated in a bird tour organized by me. They liked to know the Dutch names of the bird species we saw. Some names are identical to the South African, others are completely different and sometimes very striking. The name of Mallard in South African is Groenkopeend which is translated in English Green-headed Duck. Not so strange, right?
