Bird migration in May always yields records of scarce and some rare bird species. This year was no different and several migrating Ospreys, Red and Black Kites were seen. Also some Montagu's Harriers passed Texel, a former breeding bird of the dunes but now a rare migrant. Pied Flycatchers do not breed on Texel but showed themselves on their way to the north. The black and white males of this taxon are beautiful. Two records of Great Reed Warbler on 9 and 16 May at the Horsmeertjes, a Eastern Subalpine Warbler on 11 and 12 May in the Tuintjes and a Melodious Warbler on 11 May behind camping De Robbenjager are the highlights of this month so far. A group of no less than seven Black-winged Stilts in the Hanenplas on May 14 was an all-time high for this species on Texel.
