Only one member of the bunting family, Reed Bunting, breeds on Texel. Other bunting species are usually seen outside the breeding season. In autumn and winter these are mainly Snow Buntings. A favorite place to see these beautiful colorful birds is the beach, often against the dunes. Snow Buntings are seed eaters and the marram grass seed is especially popular. A much scarcer guest is Little Bunting. This small bunting migrates during the fall and is rarely seen on the ground. The bird in the photos was discovered at a holiday park and feasted on aphids in a maple tree. A behavior that is not often seen.
