In May, yet another new species for the avifauna of Texel was discovered. This time, it was a Great Spotted Cuckoo. This brings the total number of bird species observed on Texel to 404. The bird was discovered on May 2 in the Slufter and later relocated in the Muy. This southern European species has now been present for over three weeks and has no trouble finding its main food source: caterpillars. Several Montagu's and Pallid Harriers were also observed this month. Bee-eaters, Red and Black Kites, Ospreys, Honey Buzzards, Red-footed Falcons, and many more species passed through Texel. A late Bohemian Waxwing on May 1 is also noteworthy. By now, most winter visitors have left the island, and most summer visitors have arrived.
