Black-shouldered Kite for the second time on Texel

06 October 2024

Finally!

The first record of a Black-shouldered Kite on Texel dates back 26 years. In March 1998, this rare visitor was discovered in De Tuintjes, at the northern tip of the island. On Sunday, September 29, this beautiful species was finally seen again. This time, the bird was spotted in the dune area De Muy, north of De Koog. Hunting and perched in a tree, this Southwestern European breeding bird was seen beautifully by several people. The next day, the bird was briefly seen again in the Mandenvallei, about 7 km further north from the original discovery site.
