Long-awaited species seen on Texel

18 February 2024

Since December 7 of last year, and possibly even longer, a Gyrfalcon has been present on Texel. The young bird is regularly seen in the nature reserves Slufter and Muy. It’s not surprising when you consider that this powerhouse needs open areas to hunt. The world's largest falcon breeds in Europe on the tundras of Iceland and North Scandinavia. The last sighting of this iconic species was already twelve years ago. Several hundred birdwatchers have traveled to Texel in recent weeks to see the bird. This is the tenth sighting for the Netherlands and the first for the Wadden Island of Texel.
