Mysterious vagrant

03 June 2024

Former Dutch breeding bird

More than sixty years ago, the last confirmed breeding case of this large wader was recorded in the Netherlands. Nowadays, this nocturnal, mysterious bird with its big yellow eyes is rarely observed in the Netherlands. On May 30, a Stone Curlew appeared in the Eierland dunes, specifically in the dune area 'De Tuintjes,' well-known among birdwatchers, south of the lighthouse. This marks only the ninth record for Texel.
