Beautiful young and many waders

21 July 2024

In the month of July, many waders leave their northern breeding grounds and stop over in the Wadden Sea area on their way to their southern wintering grounds.

Notably, Red Knots, Bar-tailed Godwits, and Dunlins are often seen in large groups of several thousand birds.

A surprise was the juvenile Mediterranean Gull, which appeared at Wagejot on July 19.

Mediterranean Gulls occasionally breed on Texel. However, this young bird likely did not hatch from an egg on Texel.
