Smaller than a starling and hyperactive. Watching this little wader search for food can almost make you feel restless. Spinning on the water, the Red-necked Phalarope busily pecks for food. In freshwater, it mainly feeds on insects. At sea, it feasts on animal plankton. Its breeding grounds are in the Arctic regions of the entire northern hemisphere. This tough little bird spends the winter on tropical oceans. In the Netherlands, it is a rare migratory visitor, mainly in the months of May, August, and September.
